A Fish Called Colin
Posted on | April 22, 2009 |
UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has taken the strange decision to change the name of its Pollack fish to ‘Colin’ which is the French word for hake which is a very similar fish to Pollack. They took this bizarre course of action because they found in research that people found the name ‘Pollack’ embarrassing as it bears more than a slight resemblance to a commonly used slang word for a certain part of the male anatomy.
Many supermarkets in the UK including Sainsbury’s are really pushing to sell more Pollack as it is a good alternative to the endangered cod fish. It is also much cheaper than cod, so, it is strange it is not more popular. Sainsbury’s have even designed new packaging for ‘Colin’ which was designed to resemble one of Jackson Pollock’s famous drip paint abstracts. They hope that this teamed with the name change will help to improve the image of Pollack with the UK public whom they hope will eat more of it as opposed to traditional cod and haddock. So, why not treat yourself to some Colin and chips over the Easter?
