Healthy Bangers & Mash
Posted on | May 30, 2008 |
We all know and love the classic British dish ‘Bangers and Mash’, but unfortunately it is not the healthiest of meals due to it’s possible high fat content (sausages), and high high GI carbohydrates (potatoes).
So to make Bangers & Mash more healthy, use good quality sausages and Sweet Potato & Carrot mash.
Good quality sausages will have a higher meat ratio than low quality sausages, and will not be filled with fat and water. Try to get sausages with 90%+ meat content.
Sweet Potato is a low GI vegetable, which basically means it releases it’s energy slower in your body than hi GI foods, meaning you will not get an energy crash shortly after eating. Low Gi foods also regulate insulin better than high Gi foods meaning you are not going to put on as much weight from the foods, even if they are of the same calorie count.
Mashed carrots are a great way to add healthy bulk to the sweet potato mash, meaning you eat more veg, less carbohydrates. Carrots are also naturally sweet which will mean they will compliment the sweet potato perfectly.
You probably guessed already how to make the mash, but the recipe is below anyway.
Ingredients:
1 garlic clove, whole
A large sweet potato, chopped
3 large carrots, chopped
- Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and add all ingredients.
- Boil for 15-20mins until the carrots and sweet potatos are soft to a knife poke.
- Drain, mash, add a blob of butter (optional).
Serve with some nice chops, sausages, or use for Fish or Shepards pie.
