The benefits of eating Free-Range Chicken

Posted on | October 14, 2008 |

Recently the media has been swamped with campaigns and news on why we should be eating more free-range chicken and less battery chickens.   Battery chickens are raised in very poor conditions and suffer a variety of health problems that make their short lives very miserable.

But this article is not trying to pull your heart strings, I just want to raise some points that show the benefits of eating free-range chicken which you may have not thought about.

  • Free-range chicken has a better flavour and texture - Without a doubt, free-range chicken has a richer, buttery flavour and a more ‘meaty’ texture than watery battery chickens.  If you like your food, then you really will appreciate the difference.
  • Free-range chicken is better for your brain and belly - Scientists have proven that free-range chicken contains a lot more Omega-3 fatty acids than battery chicken does.  Omega-2 is essential for healthy brain repair and functioning.  Also, free-range chicken contains a lot more protein and a lot less fat the battery chickens, meaning after eating free-range chicken you will stay fuller for longer than if eating battery chicken.
  • Eating free-range chicken will help you appreciate your food more - Because free-range chicken is quite a lot more expensive than battery chicken, most people will not be able to buy free-range chicken as frequently as they would battery chicken.  Having chicken less frequently will make you appreciate it more when you do eat it.  Having a chicken once a week is actually very normal, and we have only started eating it as much as we do in the past couple of decades.
  • Pass on better values - Only buying free-range chicken shows that you tend to respect an animal’s life, and these values can be passed on to friends, family, and your children.  The Western consumerist ideology of recent decades has led to us consuming and wasting resources without little after thought.  Eating better chicken is such a small step in reality, but a major achievement in terms of human respect.
